“The reporting that ChangePlan generates—especially around change effort and impact—gives our leaders a visual representation that’s worth a thousand words. It prompts the right conversations and better decisions.”
Scott McConnell
Director of Change Enablement, Coast Capital
As Canada’s largest federal financial cooperative, Coast Capital is committed to helping people in Canada build better futures through unlocking financial opportunities. With a continued focus on growth across the country, the BC-based credit union was looking to evolve its capabilities to manage organizational change at scale enabling the team to navigate growing complexities with greater structure and foresight.
Partnering with ChangePlan, Coast Capital has been able to deliver sharper, business-ready reporting and manage change with greater clarity. Now equipped to deliver proactive forecasting viewed through a people-first lens, Coast Capital has built a reliable source of truth to drive informed executive conversations and help guide initiative timing, reduce risk, and shape change delivery across the organization.
The Challenge
Delivering data to inspire “aha” moments
BC-based federal financial cooperative with an 85-year legacy, Coast Capital is owned by its more than 600,000 members and employs 1,800 people across the country. As one of Canada’s only federally regulated credit unions, with Coast Capital’s continued growth and expansion came an escalating challenge: managing increasingly complex transformation initiatives while delivering timely, meaningful insights to leadership.
“As a growing organization, committed to strengthening cooperative banking in Canada, we needed to rethink the ways we were visualizing, tracking and managing change,” explains Scott McConnell, Director of Change Enablement, Coast Capital. “We were looking to mature the systems and tools we were using to help us better understand the data and use it to meaningfully guide decisions and prioritize effectively.”
“It just isn’t practical to manage organizational change with Excel, let alone turn the data into something meaningful for our decision makers. We want them to have those ‘aha’ moments that they can respond to in a smart way to lead change. But we didn’t have the right tools to deliver those moments.”
To scale their impact and build a more responsive approach to organizational change, Coast Capital sought out a purpose- built solution. Enter ChangePlan.
The solution
Fast setup, strong support, and a single source of truth
Coast Capital chose ChangePlan not just for its features, but because it offered a structured, fit-for-purpose approach that made sense from day one.
“It gave us a single source of truth for tracking and updating transformation initiatives across our organization,” says McConnell. “As entries are made and we’re building out the picture of change over the coming year, we’re able to go back and quickly update it as new information comes in. The reporting responds without us having to do a whole lot of thinking about how to make it respond.”
Implementation was fast and remarkably streamlined — a standout experience in a world where new platforms often bring disruption and delays.
“The onboarding process was smooth — we were up and running within a day of training,” says McConnell. “It was an enjoyable task, watching the picture of change come to life as we entered our data.”
Even without full technical integration, ChangePlan delivered immediate value. And critically, the support didn’t end once the platform was in place.
“The ChangePlan team has always been receptive to feedback,” says McConnell. “They listen to what their users are experiencing in the real world, and they’ve made meaningful updates based on what we’ve shared. As a client, it’s invaluable to have a partner who’s genuinely interested in improving the product and staying relevant to how we work.”
The Impact
Turning insight into action
With ChangePlan in place, Coast Capital’s change team is delivering greater visibility of change initiatives and their impacts. Regular reporting cycles now give leaders a clearer view of what’s happening across the organization — and what’s coming next.
“ChangePlan has equipped us with the tools we need to better manage organizational change at Coast Capital, while also further modernizing and improving reporting,” says McConnell. “We’re now producing regular forecasts every four to six weeks that help leaders see what’s happening and where.”
These reports do more than track activity — they surface pressure points. ChangePlan identifies potential change collisions, where multiple initiatives targeting the same stakeholder groups could overlap in timing or demands. This holistic view supports smarter planning, better scheduling, and more proactive adjustments.
“It’s very powerful as a visual reporting tool,” explains McConnell. “ChangePlan helps bring the data to life in a way that is especially effective for senior leaders who have limited time but need to know where potential collision points might impact initiatives so they can be staggered, reduced, or adjusted.”
What’s Next
Scaling impact and tackling change burden
For Coast Capital, ChangePlan delivered more than just a platform — it delivered a partnership. From a seamless onboarding experience to ongoing feedback loops that drive real improvements, the relationship has remained responsive and collaborative.
And while the platform has already transformed how the team works, there’s more ahead. Coast Capital is now looking to deepen its use of ChangePlan to better quantify change burden — especially the time and effort employees spend on training, webinars, and other readiness activities tied to new initiatives.
“We’re continually seeking to qualify and quantify not only the impacts of changes being implemented across Coast, but also the level of effort required of employees to build readiness for those changes through channels such as training and information sessions. That’s the next frontier,” explains McConnell.
Coast Capital also plans to broaden the use of ChangePlan across more teams to empower them to leverage the data to drive results in more of a self-service approach. More than two years in, the partnership continues to evolve — with ChangePlan growing alongside the needs of the Coast Capital team.
