“The reporting that ChangePlan generates—especially around change effort and impact—gives our leaders a visual representation that’s worth a thousand words. It prompts the right conversations and better decisions.”
Scott McConnell
Director of Change Enablement, Coast Capital Savings
You can’t lead what you can’t see and at Coast Capital Savings, sprawling spreadsheets weren’t delivering the visibility essential to managing change at scale.
To deliver sharper, business-ready reporting and manage change with greater clarity, Coast Capital Savings adopted ChangePlan — helping their small team navigate growing complexity with structure and foresight..
Since implementing ChangePlan, Coast Capital Savings has shifted from reactive, manual reporting to proactive forecasting, building a reliable source of truth and enabling smarter executive conversations to guide timing, reduce risk, and shape change delivery across the organization.
The Challenge
Breaking free from spreadsheets to deliver “aha” moments
A federally regulated credit union based in British Columbia, Coast Capital Savings employs around 2,000 people and serves some 600,000 members. With its continued growth and expansion came an escalating challenge: managing increasingly complex transformation initiatives while delivering timely, meaningful insights to leadership.
“We were building massive spreadsheets to try and visualize change,” explains Scott McConnell, Director of Change Enablement at Coast Capital Savings. “It was time-consuming and incredibly cumbersome. The file size of our 12-month outlook Excel spreadsheet alone was astronomical — it was crushing our machines.”
“It just isn’t practical to manage organizational change with Excel, let alone turn the data into something meaningful for our decision makers. We want them to have those ‘aha’ moments that they can respond to in a smart way to lead change. But we didn’t have the right tools to deliver those moments.”
To scale their impact and build a more responsive approach to organizational change, Coast Capital knew they needed to move beyond manual processes and find a purpose-built solution. Enter ChangePlan.
The Solution
Fast setup, strong support, and a single source of truth
Coast Capital chose ChangePlan not just for its features, but because it offered a structured, fit-for-purpose approach that made sense from day one.
“It gave us a single source of truth that we could refer to and update easily,” says McConnell. “As entries are made and we’re building out the picture of change over the coming year, we’re able to go back and quickly update it as new information comes in. The reporting responds without us having to do a whole lot of thinking about how to make it respond.”
Implementation was fast and remarkably streamlined — a standout experience in a world where new platforms often bring disruption.
“The onboarding process was smooth — we were up and running within a day of training,” says McConnell. “It was an enjoyable task, watching the picture of change come to life as we entered our data.”
Even without full technical integration, ChangePlan delivered immediate value. And critically, the support didn’t end once the platform was in place.
“The ChangePlan team has always been receptive to feedback,” says McConnell. “They listen to what their users are experiencing in the real world, and they’ve made meaningful updates based on what we’ve shared. As a client, it’s invaluable to have a partner who’s genuinely interested in improving the product and staying relevant to how we work.”
The Impact
Turning insight into action
With ChangePlan in place, Coast Capital’s two-person change team is delivering visibility and value far beyond its size. Regular reporting cycles now give leaders a clear view of what’s happening across the organization — and what’s coming next.
“It’s significantly upped our game in reporting,” says McConnell. “We’re now producing regular forecasts every four to six weeks that help leaders see what’s happening and where.”
These reports don’t just track activity — they surface pressure points. ChangePlan highlights when and where multiple initiatives overlap, enabling smarter decisions and proactive adjustments.
“It’s very powerful as a visual reporting tool,” explains McConnell. “Lines and lines of data on an Excel spreadsheet can be a challenge to decipher efficiently. ChangePlan’s visual reporting brings that data to life in a way that is especially effective for raising awareness with folks who just don’t have time to get into the weeds but need to know where potential collision points might be so initiatives can be staggered, reduced, or adjusted.”
WHAT'S NEXT
Scaling impact and tackling change burden
For Coast Capital Savings, ChangePlan delivered more than just a platform — it delivered a partnership. From a seamless onboarding experience to ongoing feedback loops that drive real improvements, the relationship has remained responsive and collaborative.
And while the platform has already transformed how the team works, there’s more ahead. Coast Capital is now looking to deepen its use of ChangePlan to better quantify change burden — especially the time and effort employees spend on training, webinars, and other readiness activities tied to new initiatives.
“We continually talk about wanting to access more data and show the time employees are pulled into training and information sessions. That’s the next frontier,” explains McConnell.
Coast Capital also plans to broaden the use of ChangePlan across more teams, so they’re working with the tool directly rather than relying on the change team to deliver reports.
More than two years in, the partnership continues to evolve — with ChangePlan growing alongside the needs of the Coast Capital team.
